My name is Neha Rashid and I am a graduate of Journalism & Strategic Comms from Northwestern University in Qatar.
Four years ago, I was attending my GES graduation, an absolute nervous wreck. I was worried about what university would do to me, if I would keep my friends along for the ride and who I would be when I’d crossed the upcoming 4-year obstacle.
What I hadn’t expected was how GES had already, in a way, prepared me for university. I just didn’t know it then. I remember sitting in class thinking, “This is so useless. I am never going to use any of this nonsense.” And true, I didn’t use the Pythagoras theorem or the classifications of the animal kingdom EVER.
But GES is where I met people willing to go beyond their call of duty to invest in me. My history teacher taught me to stand up for myself and that in return had me demanding a career of my choice from my parents; my English teacher helped me find a deeply hidden passion for writing that ended up shaping my career decisions; and our Heads of the time pushed me into leadership positions that helped me flourish in ways I had not thought possible before.
Knowing that people like these existed, incredibly shaped my university years, because I continued to explore new things and push myself out of my comfort zone.
