Academic Events

This morning, pupils at GES took part in a whole-school event to help increase awareness of the importance of eating breakfast before coming to school. The event was also aimed at promoting the attainment of a healthy, balanced diet.

Pupils from Reception through to Year 13, arrived at school with a selection of healthy food items for the breakfast buffets being held in the Infant, Junior and Secondary Schools. In line with the School’s efforts to ensure a truly vertical curriculum, all pupils were taught about essential nutrients and food groups. They then participated in tasks that enabled them to evaluate their own food intake and plan a way to make suitable food choices to ensure a healthy balanced diet. Pupils learnt how to use the ‘Eat Well Plate’ to check that they were making appropriate food choices at individual meals and throughout the day.

In addition to the opportunity to learn about diet and health, pupils had the chance to spend social time with their peers over breakfast and to further develop their relationships with their teachers. The sense of community was a predominant feature and the event was very well received by the pupils.  It was extremely successful in encouraging pupils to consider the correct eating behaviours to support their personal health, wellbeing and learning.  The pupils took two key messages from the event:

1.      Breakfast is essential to fuel the body to learn effectively and maintain good health

2.      Food throughout the day must be properly balanced between the 5 food groups to maintain health and reduce the chance of disease

This was a fun and beneficial event… perhaps a regular breakfast club is on the horizon
